Abstract
Purpose: To compare the image quality of mammograms obtained with a domestic digital mammography and the foreign high-end digital mammography.

Materials and Methods: Mammograms were prospectively obtained with a domestic digital mammography unit (AIDIA, DRTECH Corp, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, Korea) in 79 women (mean age, 47.5 years) who had previous mammograms obtained with the digital mammography unit (Selenia Dimensions, Hologic, Bedford, MA, USA). Two blinded radiologists reviewed the pairs of mammograms to evaluate overall image quality considering the contrast, sharpness, degree of exposure, and visibility of normal structures in consensus. The overall image qualities were assessed as two scales of "Superior image quality of foreign digital mammography unit", or "Superior or equivalent image quality of domestic digital mammography unit."

Results: A total of 78 women underwent screening mammography with domestic digital mammography unit. There were 71 women with dense breasts (45 grade C, 26 grade D), and 7 women with fatty breasts (grade B). When comparing the overall image quality of domestic digital mammography with foreign digital mammography, "Superior or equivalent image quality of domestic digital mammography unit" was noted in 64 women. In 14 women, "Superior image quality of foreign digital mammography unit" were noted and the causes for inferior image quality of domestic digital mammography were low contrast, low sharpness, inadequate exposure, and low skin line visibility. In cases of thin and small breasts, low contrast, low sharpness, and inadequate exposure were major problems and in large breasts, skin line was less visible. After using image post-processing algorithm, improved image quality was noted in all 14 women, and the image quality was equivalent to those of foreign high-end digital mammography.

Conclusion: The image quality of the mammograms obtained with the domestic digital mammography was comparable with that of foreign high-end digital mammography. TruviewM2 postprocessing algorithm was helpful to improve image quality of domestic digital mammography.
